A Ballyhaunis woman who failed to show up in court after being warned at a previous sitting that the case was going to go ahead on this date was sentenced to 28 days in prison and banned from driving for two years this week.

Corrib protesters gear up for summer of unrest

Tensions in north Mayo have escalated once again with eight arrests over the weekend and one on Tuesday when a large number of protesters gathered for the summer Rossport Peace Camp. With the Solitaire due to arrive back in Mayo waters in the next month, the Rossport Solidarity Camp has taken up residence in Glengad in a bid to build up the resistance to Shell over the coming weeks and months. Mary Sweeney of the Rossport Solidarity Camp said: “Resistance in Mayo is building again. We’re expecting many waterborne activists from across Europe to arrive over the following weeks. The Solitaire will leave Irish waters once again with no pipeline laid.”

Just a few weeks ago Fine Gael’s Peter Flynn and Labour’s Keith Martin, both sitting councillors on Westport Town council, condemned the vandalism and destruction of political posters outside Westport. The graffiti, which appeared to have been designed to pit two of Westport’s popular young councillors against each other, had the opposite effect with both Flynn and Martin coming together to remove the posters and condemn the cowardly act which they believe was politically motivated.

A woman driver who allowed young children to travel in the back of a commercial Ford Transit van with no restraint or place or proper seating, was convicted, fined, and disqualified from driving at Ballina District Court on Tuesday by Judge Mary Devins, who said this was a “fairly horrific incident” as “little people were left tossed around like skittles in the back of the van.”

IRMS security employers not to appear before court

Following a request by Judge Mary Devins for the prosecution in an assault case involving Maura Harrington to go back to the DPP in light of recent media reports about the connection between IRMS staff — who were witnesses in the case — and issues in Bolivia in relation to the credibility of these witnesses, and that the security employers may be called into court, Superintendent Frank Walsh outlined that DPP direction was not for the employers to be called into court, that any involvement with the security company outside of the jurisdiction should not be examined, and that evidence should be based on the veracity of the two witnesses.
