The news that ICT Eurotel is to close its Belmullet base of operations has come as a huge blow to the area. The closure of the call centre will see 82 jobs lost and will be a detrimental blow to the community in the area. ICT Eurotel employed 39 full-time and 43 part-time staff in its Belmullet operation and is expected to have completely wound down its operations by October this year.

A Dublin woman died from injuries she sustained after slipping into a ravine while climbing Mweelrea Mountain in south Mayo on Tuesday evening. The woman who was named as Margaret Sweeney (50) from Annaville Park, Dundrum, Dublin, was the mother of three grown up children.

The four elected members of the Swinford electoral area adopted a report on the €2 million upgrade works for the Parkview Estate in Charlestown at the committee’s first bi-monthly meeting of the new council this week. Five women and four men, with addresses in Ireland, the UK, and France, appeared before a special sitting of Ballina District Court on Monday evening, arising out of public order charges following a Shell to Sea protest at Glengad last Sunday. Seven of the nine were remanded in custody until today (Friday July 3).

Castlebar businessman and master chocolatier Dirk Schonkeren, who runs Helena Chocolates, the well known Castlebar café, has just been appointed as a World Chocolate Ambassador by the world’s biggest chocolate company, Barry Callebaut. The prestigious Chocolate Ambassador Club has just 70 members and Dirk is the first chocolatier in Ireland to receive the honour. He will attend a two-day seminar in Belgium and will then be called upon to share his master craft with other chocolatiers from around the globe. Dirk also plans to run some practical introduction to chocolate courses locally in the near future.
