The harsh reality of the current economic climate was played out in public last Monday night in Castlebar as a number of car transporter trucks rolled into Casey’s Castlebar to load up cars to be taken away by creditors of the now-closed car dealership. Earlier that evening staff had been informed of the closure of the business following the decision by creditors to seek the High Court appointment of a provisional liquidator for the business, which had premises in Ballina and Castlebar as well as a car rental business at Ireland Airport West Knock.

Fine Gael Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Spokesman Michael Ring, has expressed his hope that Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin can make progress on the undocumented Irish at meetings in the US this week. County manager Des Mahon this week urged the elected members of the Mayo County Council to sell the positives of the county rather than the negatives. Mr Mahon was speaking to the members on foot of a motion by Fine Gael’s Michelle Mulherin where she called for the major industries in Mayo to be afforded the opportunity to outline the problems that are affecting their growth due to inadequate infrastructure in Mayo.

Mayo county manager Des Mahon has urged the elected members of the Mayo County Council to take up the polluter pays principle as a political issue as the council tries to plan its investment programme for the next year. Mr Paddy Mahon, director of services for water, gave the elected members the list of programmes the council has earmarked as priorities for the council over the coming year. While each project listed is a priority, the big issue was the local contribution that had to be made towards the scheme under the polluter pays principle.

From the initial planning stages it has been a long struggle for the Mayo County Development Plan 2008 to 2014 to come to fruition to the satisfaction of the elected members and the Department of Environment and Local Government under the direction of Minister John Gormley. But last Monday the new development plan, which has taken up many hours of planning, discussion, meetings and angry exchanges across the country, finally came to a conclusion when the elected members voted in favour of a new ministerial directive issued by Minister for the Environment John Gormley on September 16 2009, overturning his previous directive of July 11 2008.

John Durkan from Devlis, Ballyhaunis and Bernard Joyce from Ballyvary have been elected to the National Executive of the Rural Science Association at its AGM in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Glendalough, Co Wicklow held recently. Both men graduated from NUI Galway in 2008 with a Bsc in Rural Development.
