Man drove from court after being disqualified from driving

A man from Pakistan but who lives in Ballyhaunis was arrested after he drove away from Belmullet District Court after having been prosecuted for driving with no insurance and was disqualified from driving, and he was before the same court this week.

On January 14 this year after attending Belmullet District Court, Naveed Asghar, 14 Cherryvale, Ballyhaunis was stopped by Garda Evelyn O’Mahony in Belmullet town where the defendant had no insurance or driving licence.

Michael Bohan, solicitor for Asghar, said that the man had driven after his uncle failed to collect him following his court appearance. Mr Bohan said that this is the third time that the defendant has been caught with no insurance and said that after the court hearing he was told by gardaí that he could not drive but still acted with stupidity.

Judge Mary Devins said that Asghar has a “strange attitude to the law” and convicted and fined him €1,000, disqualified him for 10 years, with a a certificate of competence to be obtained, and sentenced him to jail. The defendant was also convicted and fined €170 for having no driving licence. Recognisnaces were fixed.
