I have recently returned from a month’s teaching in Kitgum, Northern Uganda and experienced, first hand, the results of a 20 year rebel war. I met, face to face, and spoke to young men who had been abducted as boys by the rebel army, which rampaged through every village in the area until two years ago.

The Archbishop of Tuam Dr Michael Neary launched “Guidelines for Pastoral Councils – Treoirlínte do Chomhairlí Tréadach” in the McWilliam Park Hotel Claremorris last week. The guidelines are published in both English and Irish and consist of a 16-page booklet outlining the purpose, vision and term of office of pastoral councils.

Gamblers place bets on tomorrow’s predicted appearance of the Virgin Mary at Knock

Thousands of people flocked to Knock Shrine on Sunday October 11 after a Dublin clairvoyant predicted that the Virgin Mary would appear. Some claimed they saw the “sun dancing” or changing colour. However ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) next predicted ‘apparition’, the Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary has sought to distance the Catholic Church from the event. He said recent events at Knock Shrine, where members of the public believed the Virgin Mary appeared, are to be regretted rather than encouraged.

Ballina Arts centre redevelopment

The redevelopment of Ballina Arts Centre launched The Final Push programme last Wednesday. The new state of the art, centre for Ballina has got funding from various sources and those behind the project launched The Final Push in Murphy’s Longnecks during the week. The campaign needs to raise €500,000 locally for the project and they are asking for local support for it.
