Westport electricity upgrade on target

Work on the upgrading of the Westport electricity supply is on target for completion inside a year.

The €27 million investment by the ESB involving the upgrading to 110 kV capacity of the 22km of overhead line from Castlebar to Westport is now well under way, said Deputy Beverley Flynn.

“This upgrade in ESB supply will be a great boost to Westport and is a vital piece of infrastructure which will greatly enhance Westport's attraction as a location for investment,” said Dep Flynn.

The overhead electricity line project being carried out under contract by SAG is in tandem with the provision of a new station at Carrowbeg, Westport.

Part of the project also involves the construction of a new station at Castlebar, currently under construction, and the laying of 5.5km of ducting in Castlebar which is to go to tender shortly.

“This new electricity upgrade will secure Westport's future as a viable location for new investment and industrial development. It provides a vital missing link in the town's infrastructural facilities, and places Westport at the top of the preferred centres of growth,” said Dep Flynn.
