While Mayo has escaped the worst of the flooding that has caused serious problems throughout the country, there are some areas that have been affected in south Mayo. Fine Gael councillor Patsy O’Brien told the Mayo Advertiser: “There are some areas in south Mayo that have been hit, but nothing like what we have seen in Galway and in other places. The Kilmaine to Shrule road had been blocked for a while but Mayo County Council carried out some emergency repair work that ensured that it was open again, and the work that was done in Ballinacarra has made sure the roads held up this time from the downpours. A lot of good work has been done in regards to drainage in the area, but there are still a few areas that have been affected and we should get sorted out. I’ve asked the area engineer to monitor the situation so we can see how the different areas were affected and how we can deal with them for the future.”
