Have you seen the exhibition which is currently on display in Market Square, Castlebar? It certainly is a crowd stopper and is called Everyday Architecture - an exhibition of projects in Mayo, made by architects, which is currently touring the county. The exhibition considers how everyone's everyday experience can be improved through good design; be it in a house, a shopfront, a piece of furniture, a moment of life framed in a view, a detail, or how daylight enters a room.

Kilkelly to receive grant to support older people

Minister John Curran TD this week announced that more than €100,000 in grants will be given to 36 community groups under the Scheme of Community Support for Older People, with Kilkelly Glann Community Alert to receive €700 grant aid.

Mayo — the next European Destination of Excellence?

The search is on to find Europe’s Destination of Excellence. Fáilte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority, is inviting entries for the fourth phase of the European Union tourism competition, which is currently being held in 25 EU member states. The winning destination will receive a promotional photo shoot to market itself as well as €5,000 towards highlighting its attractions.

New route for IWAK following Ryanair-Shannon Airport fallout

Ireland West Airport Knock has benefited from a fallout between Ryanair and Shannon Airport. Due to Shannon’s refusal of Ryanair’s offer to keep four aircraft based in Shannon, Ryanair decided to switch the popular Faro (Portugal) route from Shannon to Ireland West Airport. Shannon’s loss is Knock’s gain and the new route is a welcome addition to IWAK’s ever expanding selection of routes.

Save money this Christmas by reducing your waste

The Environmental Protection Agency is urging households in County Mayo to stay green this Christmas and recycle their wrapping and packaging and compost their leftovers. Christmas time produces more waste than any other time of the year, according to the EPA, and this waste can be diverted from landfills if people remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle. On average, every resident in Mayo generated 729kg of municipal waste in 2008.

Manager of Westport Leisure Park, Dermot Langan, gave a comprehensive outline to Westport Town Council last Thursday night on the progress of the centre — which employs 10 full time and 15 part time staff, and has won numerous awards, particularly for the provision of disability services.
