Mayo — the next European Destination of Excellence?

The search is on to find Europe’s Destination of Excellence. Fáilte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority, is inviting entries for the fourth phase of the European Union tourism competition, which is currently being held in 25 EU member states. The winning destination will receive a promotional photo shoot to market itself as well as €5,000 towards highlighting its attractions.

The theme of this year’s competition is aquatic tourism. The competition, which is funded by the European Commission, is looking for tourism destinations in Ireland which demonstrate an innovative approach to aquatic and marine tourism which balances sustaining the local environment with the promotion of viable tourism.

The aim of the EDEN project is to draw attention to the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations and to promote destinations where economic growth is pursued in such a way as to ensure the social, cultural, and environmental sustainability of tourism.

Full competition details are available at www.failteireland.ie/eden or by e-mailing [email protected] or contacting the local regional tourism office. The closing date for entries is in February 2010.
