Everyday Architecture on Market Square

Have you seen the exhibition which is currently on display in Market Square, Castlebar? It certainly is a crowd stopper and is called Everyday Architecture - an exhibition of projects in Mayo, made by architects, which is currently touring the county. The exhibition considers how everyone's everyday experience can be improved through good design; be it in a house, a shopfront, a piece of furniture, a moment of life framed in a view, a detail, or how daylight enters a room.

The innovative exhibition formed an outdoor installation at this year's Westport Arts Festival and has just returned from display in Limerick. It features the work of 30 architects and was organised by local architects Helena McElmeel, Cuala McGann, Mark Stephens, Dermot McCabe, and David Power. The featured projects come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from simple extensions and fit out projects to civic buildings and churches. Helena McElmeel is the western region representative of the Royal Institute of Architects (RIAI ) and she is delighted with the public response so far.

“It's great to see how interested the public are in the exhibition and architecture in Mayo. They are genuinely surprised by the range of work exhibited. It shows the value that good design can add to even small projects and that architecture really is for everyone.”

The exhibition is supported by the RIAI, Western Development Commission, and Ecocem and is on display in Market Square, Castlebar, from December 16 to 22 and Belmullet Civic Centre from January 4 to 18.
