Limbik Theatre Company presents an evening of enthralling and engaging physical theatre with its dazzling production The Harbour at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday April 8 at 8pm. This funny, moving and visually arresting contemporary tale is inspired by old stories of seal-women. The Harbour follows a daughter’s journey back to her island home, where she finally learns why her mother abandoned her as a child. With haunting live music accompaniment this show explores the fragile nature of the relationships that give us shelter, and a safe haven, in a chaotic and unpredictable world.

Rising stars of song and dance for Ballina Arts Centre

Some of the best rising stars of song and dance will be showcased at a variety show style evening in the TF Royal Theatre on April 30. Five nationally and internationally acclaimed local performing arts companies have joined forces to stage the concert to help raise funds for Ballina’s new arts centre and theatre. The evening will include Irish dance, hip hop, traditional music, songs from the musicals, and swing performed by members of the Sylvan Kelly School of Dance, Aine Egan’s Danceworld, The All Star Academy under the direction of Lavinia Gilmartin, Michael Slater, and Patrick Lacken, The Bofield Céílí Band, and Cheryl Nolan and the Lambe Academy. All of the groups are based in Ballina but draw artists and students from throughout Mayo and south Sligo.

Hosanna Superstar comes to Castlebar

With Easter just around the corner, Ballina’s renowned Rejoice Gospel Choir invites you to experience all the passion, drama, and turmoil of the last days of Jesus Christ. The choir is marking its 10th anniversary in spectacular style by staging the musical Hosanna Superstar live at the Royal Theatre and Event Centre in Castlebar on Thursday March 25.

In its 10 years of existence Rejoice have earned deserved acclaim for their spirited and uplifting approach to Gospel music on a local, national, and international stage. The choir constantly strive to find new ways of reaching out to people with their music and Hosanna Superstar promises to provide audiences with a fresh insight into Jesus’ sacrifice for mankind by depicting in a colourful yet gritty production the unrest, deception, and turmoil that marked His last days. Rejoice is aware of the pressures and workloads burdening everyone at this time but urge the people of the west to come to their show to reawaken their understanding of the message of Christ and Christianity in these times of uncertainty.

The superstars of wrestling will clash in a steel cage challenge in the Royal Theatre on Monday May 3. Two men enter the cage, one will win, and neither will ever be the same again. Entering the ring in this high octane event will be the world renowned superstar Joe E Legend, the top British star Andy Boy Simmons, and heavyweight champion Delicious Dunkie D. Other stars to take to the ring will be the seven feet monster Massacre, the high flying sensation Shawn Maxer, the seductive Rachelle St Claire, and the mysterious Omen.

Folk stars live at the Linenhall

Former stars with top folk outfit Flook, Brian Finnegan, Ed Boyd, and John Joe Kelly bring their dazzling musicianship to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday, March 24 at 8pm. Brian Finnegan (flute, whistles), Ed Boyd (guitar), and John Joe Kelly (bodhrán) — erstwhile front man and rhythm section from Flook, one of the finest bands ever to have graced the folk scene — join forces to promote Brian’s new album, The Ravishing Genius Of Bones, a finely woven mix of traditional and original material. Wonderfully hypnotic, the perfect balance between grace and power, sunlight and shade, the three make for a uniquely thrilling union. They will be joined by a very special guest on the night in the form of singer, composer, Boris Grebenshikov. A great night of music in prospect, and one not to miss.

Director ready to rock Finbar Hoban presents series

Since Director’s irresistible bid for notice on the Dublin rock circuit was launched in 2005, they have crafted intelligent guitar music that has set them apart from the usual suspects. The band’s genesis saw three Malahide college entrants, guitarist Aherne, bassist Averill, and front man Moloney, playing together, with a few songs already starting to form. They began to take the operation seriously, assuming roles and casting around for a drummer to complete the outfit. Moloney, while studying for his degree in music, made the acquaintance of just such a drummer, classmate Lawlor, whose interests were in harmony with those of the group. Director was complete. A year later, after an arresting sequence of live shows amid growing popularity, Director recorded their debut record, We Thrive On Big Cities, for Atlantic Records.

They have performed with Sharon Shannon, De Dannan, and Altan and now the hugely popular and talented Cunningham family from Connemara are set to take centre stage themselves at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on March 7, with a spectacular new music and dance show called Fuaim Chonamara (The Sound of Connemara). Fuaim Chonamara boasts a wealth of talented musicians and dancers from all over the west of Ireland. Brian Ó Cuinneagáin headlines the show direct from his US tour with Teada and Seamus Begley. He will be joined on stage by his sisters Irene, Ashling, and Lorraine, while his younger brother Michael also features as a dancer and musician.

Mayo Male Voice Choir tenth anniversary celebrations coming up

The Mayo Male Voice Choir will celebrate their 10th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion they have lined up a very special grand concert in the Royal Theatre on Thursday April 22 at 8.30pm. The concert will see the choir joined on stage by the Mayo Concert Orchestra and the ladies of the Castlebar parish choir in eight part harmony for some magnificent popular numbers.
