Throughout the month of February, South West Mayo Development Company will be holding several sessions specifically for individuals seeking to develop a new business or grow an existing enterprise.
South West Mayo Development Company will highlight various supports and grant aids available, with particular emphasis on enterprise development and expansion, as well as farm enterprise and service development.

An initiative aimed at encouraging job creation for Ireland’s skilled unemployed launched last week has already received 1,177 job pledges from businesses all around the country. Of those 710 are in the Dublin region while the remaining 467 pledges are from businesses located across 19 counties, which includes 39 jobs pledged from Mayo.

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland has launched its 2012 awards programme, sponsored by DCC plc, with a call for applications from individuals in Mayo and nationwide who are developing new, big, ideas to address the social and environmental challenges we face in Ireland. Last year Sheila Gallagher of Green Sod Land Trust, with has preserved land in Mayo, was named as a finalist for the 2011 awards.

A new structured mentoring initiative where the expertise of leading indigenous food and drink companies will be shared with small food firms was launched this week at Bord Bia’s Small Business Open Day. More than 120 food companies gathered in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, Dublin, to hear how global food and drink companies such as Glanbia, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Kepak, Bulmers, and Kraft will offer their advice and expertise to small food firms in the key areas of business strategy, account management, and logistics. The mentoring programme will be coordinated by Bord Bia in cooperation with FDII (Food and Drink Industry Ireland).

Mayo-based SME consultant and owner of Irish Business Intelligence, Olwen Dawe, will outline reasons why people should consider starting up their own enterprise, how to go about it, and supports they may be eligible for.
Taking place on Thursday January 26 in the Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar, at 7.30pm, ‘The why, how, and who of starting up’ will give attendees expert insight into the key areas of starting up an enterprise.
