‘Linking In’ aiming to deliver a brighter future for workers in the west

A new free service targeted at helping employers and employees, who may have an illness or injury, to enable them to return to work is now available across Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon.
The ‘Linking In’ service works with employees and employers in the small to medium-sized business sector to support a return to work for people absent from work for three weeks or more due to injury or illness. IBEC recently estimated that up to €1.5 billion was being lost to the Irish economy every year through sick days and absenteeism, with businesses and the Government forced to absorb these costs. A considerable number of these days can be lost due to a long term illness or an injury sustained either at or outside work. Long term sick leave can have a detrimental effect on the productivity of a company and on the personal circumstances of the employee, with both feeling the strain on a financial level.

Jimmy Cullen, who works in Tesco Ballina, has been named the winner of the Service Superstar category of the 2014 Tesco Ireland Values Awards, it has been announced. This is the third year of the Tesco Ireland Values Awards, which took place at a special ceremony in the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in Dublin on Wednesday, July 2. NUI Galway has issued a final call for applications to its Elite Athlete Sports Scholarships Scheme for 2014/15. The university has a long tradition of excellence in sport and this has been enhanced by the recent success in rowing, hurling, basketball, soccer and rugby as well as numerous individual achievements. The deadline for application for current and prospective students is Thursday, July 31 at 5pm.
The Elite Athlete Scholarship Programme is aimed at student-athletes of outstanding calibre who register as students of the university. NUI Galway has had an outstanding record in supporting young athletes in developing their sporting and academic careers within recent years, scholarship athletes winning senior All-Ireland GAA titles, winning and competing at World Championship level in their chosen sport, and dozens of NUI Galway students representing their country and a number who have gone on to professional careers in a number of sports.
