Mayo company launches pesticide protection kit for farmers

Westport company, Portwest, has launched a new pesticide handling kit for farmers, which it says is the first of its kind on the market.

According to the workwear and leisurewear company, a recent study in the US of some 19,000 farmers has revealed that those who work with pesticides are at a greater risk of developing neurological problems and other side effects.

In what promises to be an interesting and inspiring evening, full of practical information and tips, Network Mayo’s April event takes place on Tuesday April 21 in Delphi Adventure Resort, Leenane. The event will encompass a range of topics relevant to women’s health and wellbeing. A courtesy bus is being provided to pick people up in Castlebar and Westport to take them to Delphi. The event starts on the bus with two speakers, Ailise Loftus, a GP with Westport Medical Clinic and Clodagh McGovern, an optometrist, who owns Eye World in Westport, giving tips on various aspects of women’s health.

On arrival at Delphi, attendees will enjoy a wine/canapé reception, followed by a talk on positive wellbeing delivered by Gerry Hussey, psychologist and performance consultant. Among his current clients are the Olympic Boxing team, Munster Rugby, and Vodafone. He has been working with Delphi since 2013.

Majority of microfinance loans went to businesses outside Dublin — Mulherin

Mayo Fine Gael TD, Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed the findings of a review of Microfinance Ireland (MFI) which has been published by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. MFI provides loans of up to €25,000 to businesses which employ 10 people or fewer and which are not able to access credit from traditional sources like banks. The report found that in its first two years of operations, MFI received 729 applications for loans, supported 743 jobs in 333 micro-enterprises, and approved loans valued at more than €5 million.
