Woodie’s in Castlebar has launched its 2016 Heroes Campaign, as part of a nationwide campaign to raise much needed funds for Ireland’s major children’s charities. In partnership with Make a Wish Ireland along with Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Jack and Jill and Irish Autism Action, Woodie’s hopes to raise €200,000 over four weeks.

Retail sales growth rate flat for quarter two

The Grant Thornton REI Q2 Retail Productivity Review of retail sales paints a concerning picture as industry growth rates continue to flatline. Some sectors performed well, while others experienced like for like declines. The clement spell of weather in late May and early June helped agri and garden which saw over nine per cent growth for the quarter.

Aurivo elects chairman and vice chairman

The board of Aurivo Co-operative Society has this week elected its chairman and vice chairman for 2016/18. Pat Duffy was elected as the chairman of the co-operative and Raymond Barlow was elected vice chairman. Pat Duffy is a dairy farmer from Gortletteragh, Leitrim. He holds a diploma in corporate direction (food business) from UCC and has been a member of the Aurivo board since 2002, serving as vice chairman for six years from 2008 to 2014. Raymond Barlow is also a dairy farmer and is from Riverstown, Sligo. Mr Barlow joined the Aurivo board in 2014.

Mayo based Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson for Agriculture Food and the Marine, Senator Michelle Mulherin, has said that a new EU deal worth €11.1 million to Ireland is great news for Mayo dairy farmers.

Senator Mulherin said: “A new aid package for the EU agriculture sector, with particular emphasis on the dairy sector, has been agreed at €500m on an EU wide basis. Ireland is to receive €11.1 million in the package which is great news for Mayo dairy farmers.

Fastcom to offer broadband services to 23k homes and business in Mayo

Fastcom, the Sligo-based telecommunications company, recently announced it had signed an open access agreement with open eir, the wholesale division of eir. The deal gives Fastcom access to 135,000 premises in Ireland’s west and northwest – including more than 23,200 homes and businesses in Mayo – allowing it to help make the area one of the best-served rural regions in Ireland.

The agreement follows open eir’s announcement that it will deliver rural broadband to a total of 1.9 million premises by 2020. As well as continuing its existing fixed broadband services, Fastcom can now access open eir’s fibre-enabled networks and deliver much-needed broadband speeds of up to 120Mbps to residents and businesses in the west.
