Castlebar Chamber to hold public meeting on town centre redevelopment

Castlebar Chamber welcomes the decision by the Castlebar Town Council to redevelop the Main Street/Ellison Street area of the town. “This is a very welcome development. The chamber have been calling for this redevelopment for a number of years and we believe that this project is a welcome boost to the traders in the traditional town centre, especially in these difficult economic times,” said chamber president Peter Glynn.

IFA criticises restaurants over failure to support Irish meat

In response to strong criticism by the Restaurants Association of Ireland over the scrapping of the Féile Bia initiative by an Bord Bia, IFA president Padraig Walshe said: “The facts are that the Féile Bia Scheme fell down because restaurants failed to support the initiative and failed to comply with the requirements regarding the use of Irish meat in their businesses.”

Revenue warns of e-mail seeking personal information

The Revenue Commissioners have warned of the existence of a fraudulent e-mail purporting to come from Revenue seeking personal information from taxpayers in connection with a tax refund. The e-mail asks the recipient to submit personal details including date of birth and debit/credit card details. This e-mail did not issue from Revenue.

GMIT student innovation winners

GMIT Castlebar has announced its student innovation winners. First prize went to Joanne Clarke from Cloonfad, Co Roscommon, a second year student on the BSc in architectural technology. She was awarded a prize of €1,000 cash and incubation space in the GMIT Innovation Centre for two months. Second prize was awarded to Diarmuid Higgins from Rush, Co Dublin, who is a second year student on the BA in outdoor education. He won €600. Both prizes are sponsored by APC and AIB.

Mongey Opticians, Castlebar and Ballinrobe, has been shortlisted for not one, but two highly prestigious awards in the upcoming 2009 Opticians Awards. Mongey Opticians are nominated for both the Independent Practice of the Year award in Ireland and UK while co-director of Mongey Opticians, Áine Higgins, is short listed for Optometrist of the Year Award. Mongey Opticians fought off fierce competition to become the only Irish opticians featuring in this year’s awards ceremony which will be held in Birmingham this April.

Castlebar Chamber outlines its direction for 2009

The Annual General Meeting of Castlebar Chamber was held on Monday March 2 in the Welcome Inn. The meeting was well attended with representatives present from across all sectors of business in the town.

Charlie Clarke, secretary, gave an report on the Chamber's activities for the past year which included the publication of Castlebar Shopping Guide, the promotion of a multilingual Shop Window Display, the launch of a new website, ongoing discussions with Castlebar Town Council on the redevelopment of the traditional town centre, liaising with gardaí on Business Watch Scheme, and the hosting of a number of seminars and networking events. He stated that a considerable amount of time and resources were devoted to the development of Castlebar Vision 2020 — a long term vision, strategy and action plan for the development of Castlebar. This plan was launched last November and sets out very clearly how the Chamber, as representative of the business community, wants to see the town grow and develop.

Mayo organisation welcomes incentives to create employment

The National Energy Training Academy (NETA), which is based in Mayo, has welcomed Energy Minister Eamon Ryan's announcement of measures to encourage the on-site generation of electricity in homes and farms across Ireland. The organisation, said the ability to sell electricity to the grid was an important step for the renewable industry but also for job creation.
