Tourism in the west to turn the corner in 2010

Following a very difficult season in 2009, the Irish tourism industry is relatively more optimistic about its prospects for this year, with almost two thirds of operators expecting that business in 2010 will be similar to or better than in 2009, according to the latest Fáilte Ireland research. This was the scenario outlined at this year’s annual Tourism in the West industry briefing held at Knockranny House Hotel.

County Mayo business people are set to learn key methods on beating the recession at a special breakfast briefing at the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, on February 1. Some 100 people from across the west of Ireland are expected to take part in Business Network International’s Big Breakfast 2010 event, to hear business guru Rob Brown spell out 140 ways to beat the recession and build business.

A major drive is required to attract new job creating projects to the 14.88 hectares technology park in Westport where just one unit is currently occupied. Local Dáil deputy and Fine Gael spokesperson on community, rural and Gaeltacht affairs Michael Ring said that he is disappointed at the level of investment by the IDA in attracting new industry to the town.

Five schools in County Mayo are twinning with locally based companies to give their students the business edge that will help them to develop their careers when they enter the workforce. That’s according to Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Labour Affairs, Dara Calleary.
The students are taking part in an innovative Government-backed programme called the Schools Business Partnership that twins schools with major local businesses.

IBEC, the group that represents Irish business, has released the results of a survey on the economic cost of the recent adverse weather conditions. On the basis of the results, IBEC estimates that the total value of economic output lost last week was approximately €700 million: €500 million in the services sector and €200 million in the manufacturing sector.
