LookWest.ie, the Western Development Commission’s (WDC) online guide to living, working and doing business in Ireland’s western region, has been shortlisted for a social media award. The awards, which celebrate the best of social media, are organised by Damien Mulley, one of Ireland’s leading authorities on social media. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges comprising a combination of industry experts and members of the public who have been selected as judges because of their interest and knowledge in online social networking.

Purchase of Dawn Dairies sees Arrabawn turnover soar

Arrabawn Co-op’s group turnover increased by over a third last year as its sales of milk and milk-related products soared thanks to strong domestic and international demand. The group had a turnover of €169.1 million in 2010 compared to €125.8 million in 2009, an increase of 34.5 per cent.

Michael Flaherty, chairman of the group, said the strong performance had been led by dairy product sales which comprised 70 per cent of overall sales, and helped by the acquisition of Galway’s Dawn Dairies from Kerry Group last year.

Successful savings and investment information evening

A large crowd attended an information evening, hosted by Permanent TSB, which was held in the Harlequin Hotel on Wednesday last. The free event was a chance for members of the public to go along and have questions answered in relation to savings and investment in the current climate. Guest speakers were there on the night to help answer any queries people had and to share their knowledge on everything from investment markets to pensions.

Reduction in VAT rate welcomed by O’Mahony

The announcement by the Minister for Finance in the Government’s jobs initiative to lower the VAT rate to nine per cent in respect of certain goods and services related to tourism is good news for Mayo, according to Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony.

Speaking after Minister Michael Noonan had announced details of the reduction, Deputy O’Mahony said that for a county like Mayo, which relies extensively on tourism, the news was a major boost.
