Big entry expected for Westportif ‘Ring of the Reek’

A big entry of more than 1,200 cyclists is expected for this year’s Westportif cycle, which takes place on Saturday July 18 to raise funds for local charity Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

Benson storms into Yellow with another win

Already 114 riders have participated in this year’s Mayo Cycling League with youth, ladies, club, junior and senior racers in the mix. Karl Benson of Castlebar took his second win of the league last Wednesday night in Swinford to take the leader’s yellow jersey out-sprinting the bunch on the drag to the finish. With the notable absence of the yellow jersey and the fact that Western Lakes was sending a racing team to Ras Dhun Na Gall the pressure was on the other contenders to place and try to take something from the race.

Mayo footballers go head to head at Polkadot cycle challenge tomorrow

Four well-known local footballers are on their bikes training for Western Lakes CC promotion of the Polkadot cycle Challenge. Pat Kelly and Brian Maloney from Kilmaine, Ciaran Kelly from Sligo Rovers and Padraic Costello from Ballinrobe will challenge each other on the cycle. The hill to the top of the Partry mountains known as Maam Trasna mountain will be the battle ground and the aim is to see which of these gifted footballers/soccer players has retained enough fitness to conquer the stiff climb.

Mizen to Malin preparations underway

There is less than a month to go to the Mizen to Malin Head challenge which will cover a distance of 598kms (368miles) in under 20 hours non stop, at an average of 31 kph, starting on Friday June 26.
