Mervue’s brace not enough
Mervue United’s two goals were not enough to overcome unbeatenWaterford United in a hard-fought first division clash on Saturday in Terryland Park. Mervue manager Tom French, who made five changes to his side with Nicky Curran, Mike Tierney, Kenny Farrell, Gerry Burke and Darren Young all coming back into the team, said his side was punished by the failure to convert opportunities. "Again we are disappointed after putting in a good performance. We handled whatever Waterford threw at us pretty well - unfortunately for their first goal we had two chances to clear the ball out of the goal area but chose to take it down and got punished. After that it took us a while to settle again but when we got the goal we started playing with a bit more composure.” Despite carving out a great chance to go 2 - 1 up, it was Waterford who wrapped up the contest with another two goals. “Their second goal took the sting out of us and they then went on to get a third. After that we settled again and got ourselves back into it with our second. We pushed hard to get an equaliser but unfortunately to no avail.”
