Cross-country season gets under way

Athletics

The St Patrick’s Day 5K DASH organised by Kilkenny City Harriers and Kilkenny Fit4Life Club proved to be an enjoyable and very successful event with just over 250 taking to the road and a further 100 plus juveniles on the track. Mayor Malcolm Noonan started the run which commenced at The Watershed and followed a course along the Bennettsbridge Road, a circle of The Castle Park and back to The Watershed.

Local athletes make the record books in Cross Country Championships

The record books will show that Kilkenny athletes had a good day at the Leinster Cross-country championships held in Kilmacow on Sunday. Starting at noon with the juvenile relays, five Kilkenny clubs got medals.

Action-packed weekend for local athletes

The “B” Track and Field Championships, rained off twice during the summer, has just taken place last weekend, in very pleasant conditions on a particularly well marked out track in Thomastown. The sun which remained hidden for much of the summer appeared in full force. Michael O’Keeffe, Thomastown, starter for the afternoon, kept events moving at a steady pace. The result was an action-packed afternoon. Competition was very keen, particularly in the under seven to under twelve age groups. So the curtain has finally come down on track and field. The cross-country season now swings into action. Hopefully the recent spell of good weather will continue at least for the county cross-country championships which take place in October. The first round is in Ballycurran Cross on October 5 and the second round will be in Annamult on 12th Oct.

Provincial finals go cross-country

Over the next couple of weeks the major cross-country focus will be on the provincial finals. Round one in Leinster, juvenile even ages, novice and masters, take place in Adamstown, Co Wexford, this Sunday.
