Benson wins Mayo Cycling League 2013
Castlebar CC’s Karl Benson added the Mayo cycling league to his list of wins, the young sprinter won three of the nine rounds, beating some experienced seniors on the way, the league itself was a real hot bed for recruiting talent with quite a few new finds. The hill climb win by Con Doherty (Westport) on the last round with Cale Coen (Castlebar) second and fourth placed Sean Flynn (Westport) in the same event highlight the talent coming through the ranks.

Friday July 1 could be remembered as the day Croagh Patrick broke all records. A group of hardy souls have been in training for the past four months and are now ready to set a few records straight. The group aim to climb up and down the mountain 12 times with three objectives in mind. The first is a Guinness World record attempt for the highest metres ascended and descended in a 24 hour period. The second is to break the national record of nine climbs on the holy mountain in one day, and thirdly to climb more metres than Everest, and go beyond the endurance required climbing the highest mountain in the world, and to achieve it without leaving the country.
World champion to compete at Westport Sea 2 Summit
The cream of Irish adventure racers and athletes is set to descend on Westport this weekend for the inaugural Westport Sea 2 Summit Adventure Race. The event, which is only in its first year, has attracted more than 600 entries from all over Ireland and across the water.
Postman sets new record on bike week
Padraig Marrey from Western Lakes CC set a new time from Galway GPO to Limerick GPO when cycling the 58 miles in a time of 2hrs 14mins and 11seconds. He took 20 minutes off the previous time set by Kieran Keane of Dublin. “Everything went according to plan,” said Marrey. “The Garda escort out of Galway and into Limerick were essential and the motorbike escort by Peter Flanagan and Dessie Flynn made sure all potential hazards were kept at bay.”
Duathlon win for postal worker
Popular An Post worker Noel Brady has become a an All-Ireland Duathlon hero after winning the National Duathlon Championships in Burnfoot, Co Donegal, on April 25. The veteran Westport athlete and cyclist won his first National title on April 25 last.
Bourke Waste Rás Mhaigh Eo
After a long absence from the Irish Cycling calendar, St Patrick’s Day, 2010, sees the return of Rás Mhaigh Eo to the roads of Mayo. Organised by Westport Cycling Club, Covey Wheelers, and sponsored by Bourke Waste, the race will take place over 80km circuit. The race will start in Westport, and continue out to Ashleagh Falls, then Louisburgh, and back to Westport, finishing with a climactic sprint on the West road.
