North Mayo to get a greenway along the Moy
There was good news for the north Mayo area with the announcement yesterday of an allocation of €250,000 seed money to begin construction on a 14 km greenway from Ballina to Killala along the River Moy. The greenway will incorporate an off road cycle track and walk and will incorporate a number of monasteries along the river. It is envisioned that this 14km stretch will be the first phase of a multi-phase greenway in the larger north Mayo area.

Mayo North East LEADER Company which has taken over the responsibility for a large portion of the work of Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta which dealt with LEADER schemes in the Gaeltacht area and which closed in 2011, is currently going through the ‘legacy files’ from the area and hopes to have the work on these files completed by the middle of the month and then open up for new applications which will be paid out by the end of the year. The members of the Belmullet Electoral Area were informed of this news at their September meeting this month.
Ballina Eat Wise project awarded funding
Safefood has announced that a local Mayo community food initiative is one of nine all island recipients to receive funding for the Community Food Initiatives Programme 2013-15, which aims to positively influence the eating habits of families in low income communities. Eat Wise Project is an initiative by Mayo North East LEADER which will proactively engage with disadvantaged communities in Ballina to encourage and support people to make informed decisions about their diet and that of their families.

The Education Working Group of Mayo County Development Board is hosting an ‘Education and Training Expo’ in The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar on Saturday June 16, which will feature a broad mix of educational providers in the county offering information on courses and training supports to suit people of all ages. Information on both accredited and non-accredited part-time, full-time and evening / weekend courses will be supplied.
