Lower Dominick Street about one hundred and fifty years ago
According to Hely Dutton, Dominick Street was built in the early part of the 19th century. It was outside the old city walls and was an indicator of how Galway was beginning to expand at the time. This photograph, which was taken c1965, is probably the earliest existing image of the street.

Mayo crèche wins top award
The SMA Know-How maternity and infant awards 2012 took place on Friday November 16 at the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin, with Ballyglass Community Childcare Centre from Mayo picking up the Best Community Crèche Award. The awards celebrate inspiring individuals who have touched the lives of those around them, and recognise the leading maternity products and services as voted for by the public.
The most Irish of games
Hurling is said to be older than the recorded history of Ireland and to predate Christianity. In Seamus King’s remarkable book The History of Hurling, there is a reference from Irish verbal history of hurling being played as far back as 1,200BC in Tara, County Meath. The earliest written references to the sport in Brehon law are from the fifth century.
