Stylish summer sports wear for the fashion conscious

With all the sporting events happening over the summer, I’ve been feeling quite motivated to keep fit. I am an avid fan of Pilates, and try to attend a couple of classes a week and lately I’m training to run five kilometres; for no particular reason other than keeping healthy. With the sunshine here to stay for a week or two, there is no time like the present to be outdoors, whether it’s to take a stroll in the park or run a full marathon. Getting the right clothing is important, for comfort more than anything, especially for your feet to protect them from injury. I’ve been doing some research on the sporting attire on offer this season, and do you know what? It’s just a little stylish!

A new era of design

In with the new

Department stores can be a Mecca of labels, and thankfully close to home we have a few of these to spoil us. And what makes me very excited is that two of my favourite labels, Sandro and Maje, are launching at Brown Thomas Galway. So what better way to check out what these labels will offer, than to do a little photoshoot and style up some looks to inspire your summer wardrobe.

It’s that time of year

Every summer our country embarks on a season of celebrations. Yes, it’s that time of year — wedding season. I have already been to one, with three more to go, and with one being black tie, I have an added level of complexity. Trying to make the most of one outfit is doable but difficult, and none of us wish to spend our annual clothing budget on one piece. There are always some clever ways to reinvent existing dresses, but sometimes we just long for something new. Weddings are always a very glam affair, and a great excuse to get all dolled up. With a huge range of formal wear available on the high street, and the ever popular dress hire concept appearing all over the country, there is no need to worry, there are plenty of options.

All in one

When I was a child, I wore a pinafore to school. I never thought almost 25 years later, I would be back wearing a pinafore, and versions of it, as a fashion trend. I have no idea who is to blame for the return of the “all-in-one” look, but whoever did, must have known it was going to be the must have item for our summer wardrobes. Comfort and style all in one, plus a huge saving on your suitcase space, the jumpsuit, playsuit, pinafore, and dungaree trend have been reinvented for the current season. The jumpsuit has been here for a couple of seasons now, but this year we see shapes and styles change, to make this look more wearable.

Add some sparkle

Summer is a great time to accessorise, I think. You can have so much fun with colour, especially with the very trendy neon this season, and adding a little bling is never a bad thing. And you have to remember that whether you like to wear scarves, bangles, or bags, they never really go out of fashion, so think of them as a very good investment. My current favourites include gold bangles (lots of them), big, chunky, necklaces, and gold earrings, worn with my go-to look of a T-shirt and black blazer. With plenty of collections and designers to choose from, here are just a few of my summer picks.

The shoe edit

I am in the leather goods capital of the world right now — Italy. Bags, shoes, wallets, and belts, you name it, Italy has it in the highest quality leather. So there is no better time to talk about my favourite thing, surrounded by the best in the world — shoes.

The denim dilemma

No wardrobe should be without a good pair of jeans. Whether you prefer a skinny, a wide leg, or a boyfriend cut, jeans are a great staple, especially for the summer (if we ever get one). No matter what way you style them, they are the go-to piece, the old reliable, the never-let-you-down piece. My favourite outfit has always been a pair of dark denim skinny jeans, a white T-shirt, and a blazer, accessorised with scarves and lots of jewellery. It is chic and effortless, and most importantly, classic. Jeans are not always driven by trends, it is about fit and comfort in whatever style works for you. I have talked about denim before, but this time, it is about creating great outfits for the sun, or the rain.

The best of online

The beauty of how shopping has evolved means that we have almost every brand at our fingertips thanks to e-commerce and online retailers. The most coveted, must-have item can be ours the minute we read about it in a magazine. I have spent the last week between Dublin and London, previewing the best spring summer collections from some of the world’s most famous online shops. Trends like monochrome and print dominate, along with statement accessories, especially in neons, which will inspire a colourful and fun season in fashion.

Taking care

A study was recently performed by Triton showers to determine how we like to clean ourselves. The survey asked 250 people across five locations in Ireland and it was determined that 50 per cent of those surveyed spend a minimum of 10 minutes in the shower with 14 per cent having two showers a day. It is pretty clear that we like to take care of ourselves, especially our hair and skin, which highlighted something to me this week; fashion might be important but we get just a little excited about the world of beauty. The summer is only a couple of months away and so I have been trying and testing some key things to get us in tip top shape for the long awaited holiday.
