After fine National Senior Track and Field Championship performances from across the county, three Galway athletes have been confirmed as selected on the Irish team for the upcoming European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Galway athletes will travel in numbers to the blue riband track and field event of the season on the domestic calendar, the National Senior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Santry this weekend.

Galway athletes enjoyed an outstanding weekend at the National U20 & U23 Track and Field Championships in Tullamore, securing national titles and medals across a wide range of disciplines.

Penney took gold in the High Jump with a best leap of 2.10 metres with a stunning series of jumping. Clubmate Darragh Kelly secured bronze with 1.95 metres. Penney later added bronze in the testing 110m Hurdles event.

The Galway Men’s Team won County Gold for the third year in a row, under manager Siobhan Kelleher, sharing the podium with Donegal and Kerry. The squad were led by Justin Lane, the inspirational captain of the men's team, and he also won the Pole Vault in a fine 2.30m clearance. He was fifth in the weight for Distance Throw.

Emma Moore of Galway City Harriers will compete over 800m individually following her great early season performances, and also is chosen on the 4x400m Relay team. Andrew Egan will also compete in the 200m and the 4x400m events.

Galway teams excelled at the National League finals last weekend in Tullamore.

Four Galway athletes will compete on a 35-strong Irish team in the European U18 Championships in Slovakia, taking place this week.

Conor Penney of Calasanctius College and Craughwell AC was outstanding. He smashed the Tailteann Games High Jump record with a huge 2.09 metre effort. Penney leaped up to 2.05 metres clearing all heights on his first attempt, and then set the record initially by jumping over at 2.07m and added further to it when clearing 2.09m on his second attempt for an amazing victory.
