It is unusual to have a festival atmosphere on a Monday night in a west of Ireland town in early February, but that was the case in Castlebar last week, when several large band trucks arrived into town that day and set up outside the Royal Theatre. The job of unloading stage equipment and instruments started early and by 5pm all was in place for a magical Night With The Stars, hosted by Midwest Radio. And shine brightly the stars did, to a capacity crowd, who cherished each performance – including some surprise guests.

The autumn meeting of the Galway Races begins on Monday for three days, consisting of 21 races, both flat and national hunt races. The Autumn meeting of the Galway Races begins this Saturday August 28 for three days. One of the highlights of the racing festival will be the Ardilaun Hotel-listed Oyster Stakes,which is now in its nineteenth year, takes place on the last day of the races, Monday August 30. The Ryan family of the Ardilaun Hotel first became associated with this prestigious race in 1991 and have continued their support over the years.

It was captain’s prize day last Sunday in Balla and Richie Murphy was the big winner on the day, a second round which saw Murphy come home in eight shots less than his first was enough for him to seal the prize. His two round total of 112 was enough to see him hold off the challenge of Joe Monaghan in second place, with Padraic Cuffe coming home in third place. Dermot MacMahon finished in fourth with PJ Brett in fifth, Fenton Barrett sixth, Seamus Holian seventh, and Padraig Martin eighth. The gross prize was won by Thomas Walsh, with Vinnie Gibbons taking the win for the first 18 and Seamus Cleary the second 18 over the two days. The beginners’ section was won by Sean Kelly, with Mick Murray winning the visitors’ competition and Ian Walsh second in that section. The youths’ prize was won by Dara Cawley with John Cunnane second. Junior Prendergast took the past captain’s prize with Ray Mannion winning the nearest the pin.

Music fans from all over Connacht are planning to congregate in the Wyatt Hotel in Westport for an event that is being billed as the Charity Night of the Stars on Monday December 15 at 9pm.
