It was captain’s prize day last Sunday in Balla and Richie Murphy was the big winner on the day, a second round which saw Murphy come home in eight shots less than his first was enough for him to seal the prize. His two round total of 112 was enough to see him hold off the challenge of Joe Monaghan in second place, with Padraic Cuffe coming home in third place. Dermot MacMahon finished in fourth with PJ Brett in fifth, Fenton Barrett sixth, Seamus Holian seventh, and Padraig Martin eighth. The gross prize was won by Thomas Walsh, with Vinnie Gibbons taking the win for the first 18 and Seamus Cleary the second 18 over the two days. The beginners’ section was won by Sean Kelly, with Mick Murray winning the visitors’ competition and Ian Walsh second in that section. The youths’ prize was won by Dara Cawley with John Cunnane second. Junior Prendergast took the past captain’s prize with Ray Mannion winning the nearest the pin.
The junior scramble, which took place on Saturday, was won by Shane Gaughan, Kevin Prendergast, and Michael Dunleavy. The team of Matthew Gilligan, Ethan Munroe, and Grainne Gilligan came second while in third was Éimhín Morrin, Patrick Burke and Thomas Prendergast. In the ladies’ section Kitty O’Connor came out on top just ahead of Mary Lavin, with Catherine McNulty taking third. Carmel Costello won the gross prize, with Mary Brett coming home in fourth, Geraldine Evans took fifth, Geraldine O’Malley sixth, and Nora Gibbons seventh.
Ballyhaunis
In last weekend’s competition sponsored by Grogan’s Concrete, Neil Lyons won the junior section with a score of 65. In the ladies’ competition Marina Coyne just held off Kung Fanning to take the win after both finished on 37 points. Margaret Hierons came home in third place with Mariette Potgieter taking the gross prize. In the men’s competition Tommy Moran won the day with a round of 66, he finished just one ahead of David Hierons who came second. Paul Walsh was the gross prize winner with Ivan Freeley taking third.
Ballina
In last weekend’s 18 hole single Stableford competition sponsored by Western Glass, Vincent Tomas was the winner with a score of 45 points, Pat Joyce came home in second place with 42 points, and Pat Howley came third on 39 points.
The time sheet for the President’s prize is now on the main notice board. The club fundraising classic will be held over three days on September 10, 11, and 12. Details will be posted on the notice board in the coming week.
Ballina Golf Club seniors have qualified for the Connaught final of the JB Carr Trophy with a good 3-2 win over Roscommon Golf Club. They now go on to meet Galway GC in a two legged final home and away on August 24 and 27.
The winning Ballina team was; Thomas Forde, Michael Forde, Nicky McLoughlin, Stephen Casey, Sean Rowley, Des Sweeney, Bill Kiely, Sammy Gavin, Denis Forde and Pearse Forde.
Westport
Next weekend Bridie Hughes will host the 2010 President’s prize. The competition will be played over 18 holes and the time sheet is open for competitors to play on either Saturday or Sunday.
The junior girls brought home a national Community Games title last weekend. Lucy Golden, Siobhan Golden, Megan Collins, Alex Mathastein, and Fiona Gordon took gold in the pitch ‘n putt competition. The lady captain has organised a table quiz and raffle to take place in the clubhouse on Thursday August 26 at 8.30pm. All members and their friends are invited to attend, the proceeds of the evening will go to the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. An open competition for junior boys will take place on Monday August 23. The age groups are u14, u16, and u18. Westport members are requested to take an early slot on the time sheet, which is now open. Next week’s President’s prize for the gents will be a double-pointer towards the overall GOY title. Joe Kelly is certainly not resting on his laurels following another solid performance last week. However, with five times the points available in the final two qualifying GOY competition, everything is still to be played for.
