Five hardy souls from Mayo are getting ready to take on a wild sort of a challenge for charity next month.

Well-known Castlebar DJ Johnny Oosten, the Western Care Association, and the Irish Cancer Society have joined forces to launch an epic charity cycle this May that is sure to appeal to many an adventurous soul.

Two Castlebar DJs have come up with a fun campaign to put the ‘selfie’ phenomenon to work to raise funds for specially trained dogs that help transform the lives of children with autism.

On March 23, the second annual Challenge the Greenway event will take place in Westport. The Western Greenway is a picturesque off-road walk/cycle trail that traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast and follows the old Achill/Westport railway-line. The challenge will set off from Achill Sound, pass through Mulranny and Newport and finally finish up in Westport.

Mayo has one representative in the Calor Community Champion 2012 awards. The shortlist of nominees was announced this week with voting now open to the public through the Calor Facebook page.

From May 14 to 16, Rita Scott, Johnny Oosten and Gary Browne are taking on the endurance test of presenting live on CRCFM Castlebar for 48 hours. They are doing this to raise funds for CRC and Aware.

Back in 2007 Johnny Oosten came up with an idea. This idea centred primarily around creating awareness and raising vital funds for children with autism in Ireland by means of the Croagh Patrick Seven Day in a Row Challenge. Le Chéile Family Resource Centre (FRC) celebrated Bealtaine in style by having a coffee morning for the community on May 30. Bealtaine provides the opportunity to celebrate creativity in older age and Castlebar’s Le Chéile FRC did just that. The coffee morning was officially started by Mayor of Castlebar Councillor Gerard Deere. The crowd were entertained by Mayo’s finest Politically Correct, and Tommy Fleming dropped by for a sing-song and a cup of tea. The whole event was broadcast live on the Johnny Oosten show on Castlebar Community Radio.
