A group of top local musicians are uniting to stage a rock and roll extravaganza in Castlebar next weekend to raise awareness and funds for a suicide prevention initiative.

Into The West American Auto Club is hosting its annual event - the 101 American Classic and Retro Show on August 11 in Castlebar. The event will take place on a hard surfaced site at Shaw Commercials, Breaffy Road Business Park, and will assist with funding towards Talkaboutit, the voluntary organisation based in Mayo which raises awareness about suicide.

Tonight, Friday April 13, in The Royal Theatre, Castlebar at 8pm, Weightwatchers will host A Night of Transformation fashion show.

“Shocking” and “disturbing” is how Westport native Joe McGuire describes the ever increasing and alarming suicide statistics in Ireland. Next month the outspoken suicide awareness campaigner is to launch www.talkaboutit.ie a new west of Ireland based voluntary group that aims to bring suicide into the public arena.

After the startling statistics presented to a crowd at the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre it is no surprise that the 50/50 Phone a Friend suicide awareness campaign is evolving. It originated in Westport and has since been launched in Ballina and now in Castlebar.
