After the startling statistics presented to a crowd at the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre it is no surprise that the 50/50 Phone a Friend suicide awareness campaign is evolving. It originated in Westport and has since been launched in Ballina and now in Castlebar.
50/50 had their official Castlebar launch on Wednesday May 18 and were delighted to have the support of Castlebar councillors Harry Barrett and Noreen Heston and members of An Garda Síochána. Also in attendance was Mayor Ger Deere who commended the 50/50 committee members for their great work in bringing such a prevalent issue to the forefront and offered his continuous support for future endeavours.
Other speakers at the event were Mr Joe McGuire, the founder of 50/50, secretary Michael Ryan, and Inspector Joe McKenna. Mr McGuire and Mr Ryan elaborated on the statistics of suicide in Ireland today and the factors that may lead to suicide such as depression, alcohol and substance abuse. They also alerted people to the early onset reasons and signs of depression. Made clear was their aim, which initially is to erect a specially commissioned plaque which highlights 24 hour helpline numbers in places such as pubs, schools, and community groups for people feeling depressed or suicidal. They also stressed the importance of talking about suicide and issues surrounding it in a bid to stop the stigma. Inspector McKenna was able to give a personal account of the devastation caused to family and friends following suicide as he also works in the capacity of a family liaison officer, and is in the unenviable position of having to inform families of such tragedies. He also offered his support and the support of An Garda Síochána for future launches and events.
There has also been a welcome addition to the 50/50 Phone a Friend organisation and that comes in the form of Faith, Hope and Charity shop at Market Square, Castlebar. 50/50 Phone a Friend is going from strength to strength and has a new office on Distillery Road, Westport and is already putting together a strategy for implementing different awareness events.
