Over the last few weeks we have been writing about the building on Earl’s Island which began life as a bleach and flax mill in the 1850s. It was then converted into a jute factory, became a bonded warehouse, a factory for making cannon shells during World War I, and was occupied by the 6th Dragoon Guards and the 17th Lancers during the War of Independence. After the British army left, it was vacant for a while before being converted into a factory known as IMI, or Irish Metal Industries.

Minister honours city swimming pioneers during visit to Leisureland

Michael Ring TD, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport visited Leisureland last week on the invitation of Leisureland’s board of directors. His visit to the Salthill facility was dual-purpose. Firstly, the minister wanted to see first hand the new improvements to Leisureland’s pool plant facilities, which were upgraded recently, aided by the provision of a substantial grant from the ministers department.

Galway swimmers in fine form at Cranny meet

The annual Jimmy Cranny swim meet, hosted by Galway SC, produced an impressive and stylish day’s swimming of which Jimmy Cranny, the club’s founding father, would have been proud.

Swimmers shine

Swimmers from all of Connacht and some from Munster competed over the two-day swimming festival at Leisureland, Salthill.
