Lough Ree RNLI marked a significant milestone on Monday last, October 17, when a cheque for €100,000 was presented to the RNLI as the local community contribution to the overall €1.2 million cost of the new lifeboat station on a site donated by the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland.

The boat that we have all come to know from the Lotto ad, the Lough Ree Access for All wheelchair accessible boat, made a rare visit to Coosan Point on Lough Ree recently for a event organised by the Athlone branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI).

At a special naming ceremony and service of dedication held in Coosan Point on Saturday last, Lough Ree RNLI officially opened its new state-of-the-art lifeboat station and named its inshore Atlantic 85 class lifeboat, Tara Scougall, in memory of a beloved, daughter, wife and mother, the event coinciding with Lough Ree RNLI’s tenth anniversary on the lake.

As it celebrates its 10th anniversary, volunteers at Lough Ree RNLI will host a dual celebration at Coosan Point at 2pm on Saturday, June 11, when the charity’s new state-of-the-art lifeboat station will be officially opened.

On Friday of last week, the volunteer crew at Lough Ree RNLI performed the historic inaugural launch of the charity’s lifeboat ‘Tara Scougall’ from it’s newly commissioned boathouse at Coosan Point, Athlone.

Lough Ree RNLI volunteers recently had the opportunity to examine progress on the building of its new boathouse now nearing completion at Coosan Point.

In their quest to construct a new lifeboat station at Coosan Point on the shores of Lough Ree, the RNLI is seeking the financial support of both the local and wider communities to achieve this much desired goal.

A successful and well attended race night, with the funds raised going towards the progressive work of the Athlone branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland and Athlone RNLI was held at the Lough Ree Inn on Saturday night last.

Co hosted by the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland and Waterways Ireland with the support of Conference Partners, Athlone was the chosen destination for the 20th World Canals Conference.

The World Canals Conference took place this week in Athlone and brought together canal and waterway enthusiasts, professionals and academics from around the world.
