Battle of the ‘Towns’ in Tuohy Cup final

It’s a battle of the Towns in Milebush Park on Sunday, when Newport Town face off against Ballyhaunis Town in the Tuohy Cup final at 3pm. The men from Ballyhaunis Town will go into the game as favourites, as they sit 14 points clear of Newport Town in the Welcome Inn Premier B table. Ballyhaunis Town are right in the title hunt only three points off first placed Kiltimagh/Knock United, and two points behind Glenhest Rovers in second place. Newport Town are currently sitting third from the bottom in the league table with only three wins from their 11 league games so far this season, but they are still six points clear of the relegation zone. When these sides met in the league a few weeks ago, Ballyhaunis Town ran out 5-2 winners in Ballyhaunis and also saw off Newport Town 1-0 in the second round of league games.

Charity walk on Clare Island for Western Care Association

Details of the 2014 Clare Island Charity Walk were announced at the launch in Walshe’s Bridge Inn, Newport this week. This, the seventh year of this great walking event, will take place on Saturday, June 28 and all funds raised will go to Western Care Association local services. Speaking at the launch Clare Island Walking Committee chairman, Willie Murphy, stated that he and his committee are delighted to be supporting Western Care Association this year. Western Care is a community based organisation that provides support to more than 1,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities and their families throughout County Mayo. The Annual Clare Island Charity Walk has grown from strength to strength over the years and the hard working committee have raised in excess of €100,000 for local and regional charities and causes over the past six years. It provides a great opportunity to visit the idyllic Clare Island and experience the beauty and scenery of the island and Clew Bay.

Get into the Bank Holiday spirit at Hotel Newport

Hotel Newport is getting into the festival spirit this Bank Holiday weekend as the Newport Grainne Uaile Festival gets under way on Thursday evening. With something for everyone, festival goers can see boat flotillas, vintage car parades, and dance and sport acts. There will also be children’s entertainment and activities throughout the weekend and live open air music every evening. The official launch of The Greenway also takes place on Friday July 29, by Taoiseach Enda Kelly who will be welcomed to Newport by Festival Queen Joanne O’Donnell.

Historical tours

A guided historical tour of Castlebar town will be provided each Saturday morning during July and August in Newport, conducted by Brian Hoban, local historian and Fáilte Ireland Approved Tour Guide. Tours will depart from The 1798 Memorial, The Mall, Castlebar (beside traffic lights) at 10am sharp.
