A company which provides adventure trips on Clare Island off the Mayo coast was selected by a panel of top travel journalists as one of the best places in the country to enjoy a day out.

Clare Island is to welcome an influx of adventurous mainlanders to its shores tomorrow (Saturday May 2) for the third annual Clare Island Adventure Race, which starts at 1pm.

A trio of businesses which came together to promote adventuring on Clare Island has won a national award.

The finalists in the Small Firms Association (SFA) National Small Business Awards 2014 were announced this week by, AJ Noonan, SFA chairman and chair of the awards judging panel. The aim of the awards is to celebrate the achievements of small business in Ireland, and to recognise the vital contribution of the small business sector to Irish industry.

For the first time since Granuaile’s day, a tall ship will moor overnight at Clare Island. Scheduled to arrive on July 23, the barquentine Thalassa is an imposing and seaworthy sailor, rigged according to old tradition but fitted with every modern safety convenience. It is embarking on an Irish tour, leaving Belfast on Sunday July 14 and finishing in Galway on Sunday, July 28.
