A man of the people” and someone who “always endeavoured to do his very best” were just some of the tributes paid yesterday to the late John Carty, who passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 63. The former politician from Knock had served Mayo as Fianna Fáil TD from 2002 until the 2007 general election, and after that as a member of the Seanad from 2007 until 2011 when he decided not to run again. Prior to that Mr Carty had been a county councillor for the Claremorris electoral area. He is survived by his wife Kathleen and their eight children.

Martin calls for Sacred Heart to be retained and improved

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will finish his two days of engagements in Mayo today, but yesterday as part of his visit to Castlebar, he spent over an hour in the Sacred Heart Hospital meeting with staff and patients and he called for action to be taken very quickly to ensure the hospital remains and is improved. Speaking to the press afterwards he said: “Firstly I was very impressed with the presentation I was given by the staff there. I was very impressed with the facility, particularly the rehab facility that was there. I think your fortunate to have a facility like the Sacred Heart that has a lot of potential”
