Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will wrap up his two day tour of Mayo today, with engagements in Ballina, Knock Airport, Claremorris, and Ballinrobe. In south Mayo he will meet with local representatives and current Galway West TD Eamon O Cuiv, who will see a large part of south Mayo come into his constituency. Speaking to the press yesterday, Martin was hopeful of seeing the party grow again in Mayo. “I remember when I was here last time, at a major meeting it was the strongest and largest crowd in numbers that turned out,” he said. “We have a strong councillor base, not what it was before, but it’s stronger than in a lot of other counties.
“I’ve noticed there is a warmth here, but I know we have to rebuild trust with the people, it’s not going to be easy I know that, it’s going to be a long journey for Fianna Fáil.” He praised Dara Calleary TD for leading the party in the county during tough times. “Dara has been leading very well in Mayo, I believe we can win extra seats here in the next local elections and even in the next general election where there will be a boundary change. It will be more challenging but that’d down the road, local elections first. We’re encouraged by the personal that are joining the party. But I’m encouraged that people are ready to come forward.”
