Galway City Harriers’ Emma Moore is part of a 12-strong Ireland team provisionally selected for the World Indoor Championships that starts in Poland on Friday week.

The stars of Irish athletics will take to national competition this weekend as the 123.ie National Indoor Athletics Championships take centre stage at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena across February 28 and March 1.

Emma Moore placed sixth in her debut at senior level at the World Indoor Tour Gold event in Ostrava on Tuesday.

Emma Moore surprised even herself eight days before Christmas when, at a low-key indoor athletics meet, she ran an outright personal best and set a new national U23 record of 2:02.39 for the 800m.

Emma Moore of Galway City Harriers placed seventh in a competitive heat over 800m individually, and later in the championships was instrumental on the Women's 4x400m team who set a new national U23 record in their heat. The quartet of Moore, Kate O'Connell (Lucan Harriers), Victoria Amiadamen (Dooneen AC), and Jenna Breen (City of Lisburn AC) clocked a time of 3:34.81 to dip under the previous record (3:34.87) set in 2017.

Emma Moore of Galway City Harriers will compete over 800m individually following her great early season performances, and also is chosen on the 4x400m Relay team. Andrew Egan will also compete in the 200m and the 4x400m events.

The strength in depth of Galway Athletics was showcased last weekend by strong performances by a number of track and field athletes at an international meet in Belgium.

Two of Galway’s top young athletes excelled and claimed medals in a highly competitive series of races at the 123.ie National Senior Indoor Track and Field Championships that was held over two days last weekend in the National Arena in Abbottstown, Dublin.

Galway clubs enjoyed success the Connacht Indoor Athletic Championships held over two days in Athlone at the weekend.
