ANIMATION, TV presenting, and visual effects workshops will take place during the Junior Galway Film Fleadh which runs from November 13 to 16.

THE 18TH Junior Galway Film Fleadh returns next week with a host of exciting workshops for children and teens in Stop Motion, Special FX, and Pixilation, as well as a screening of the French film Le Gamin Au Vélo.

THE AMAZING adventures of a young French woman, a tiny girl who lives under the floorboards, the lives of three young street dancers in Germany, and making sculptures from other people’s rubbish - it is all in this year’s Junior Galway Film Fleadh.

There is a wonderful mix of the modern and the traditional in this photograph which was taken at the corner of Eyre Square and Rosemary Avenue in the mid 1930s. The woman in the foreground is wearing a plain black shawl, a petticoat and a ‘práiscín’ which was a heavy canvas apron worn to protect the skirt. Two others are wearing beautifully patterned shawls which must have looked very elegant and colourful. They had probably come into town to sell their wares, and then went shopping with the proceeds, and their baskets are now full. The other women in the picture are all dressed in more ‘up to date’ coats and berets. It looks as if all of these people are waiting for a bus.

YOUNG GALWEGIANS who love everything to do with film can look forward to the Junior Galway Film Fleadh in the Town Hall Theatre from November 3 to 6.

A visual arts exhibition inspired by the Claddagh and the area’s experience of the Famine, originally exhibited in the Galway City Museum, is to be shown in London.

LORG PRINTMAKERS will hold a series of workshops in printmaking, photo-shop, animation, and etching in its premises at Unit 8 in the Ballybane Enterprise Centre.

In the 1870s the parish of Rahoon extended from Corcullen to Furbo. It had two chapels, one in Barna and one in Bushypark. Those people who lived in the town side of the parish attended Sunday Mass in the chapel attached to the Presentation Convent, but it was quite small and worshippers often had to kneel on the ground outside, no matter what the weather was like. As a result many of the major parish ceremonies were moved to the Pro-Cathedral. In 1881 no fewer than 300 children from the parish were confirmed in Middle Street, which gives us an idea of the population of the area.

ONCE THE Galway Arts Festival is over it is time for the Galway Races, which means betting, drinking, fashion, and gee-gees, but for every Galwegian who loves the races, there is a Galwegian who would prefer to do something else.

ACCLAIMED FRENCH and German films, Galway made shorts, and workshops in radio and digital animation are all part of this year’s Junior Galway Film Fleadh, which runs from Wednesday November 11 to Saturday 14 in the Town Hall Theatre.
