Following a week fraught with continuing tension between protesters and Shell E & P Ireland and the undertaking of a hunger strike by Maura Harrington, a resolve in the contentious issue may have been attained when at lunch time Thursday SEPIL released a statement in which it confirmed that “the Solitaire will leave Killybegs today for a UK port where deep water berthing facilities are available”.

The response to the Government’s announcement last week that a new community forum is to be established to tackle the long-running Corrib gas saga has been received positively, although Shell to Sea have yet to release a statement on the matter.

The new Corrib Community Forum, which is due to hold its first meeting this morning (Friday) under the chairmanship of Mr Joe Brosnan, could be in for a rocky start due to the lack of representation by leading community groups.

Local community groups expressed their discontent with the Forum for North West Mayo at Belmullet on Friday with a press conference being disrupted by angry outbursts from local groups who were unhappy with the procedure of the behind-closed-doors, invite-only forum.

The Corrib gas partners have announced details of the successful applicants to their June 2008 round of funding under their Local Grants Programme. A total of 24 groups have been awarded grant aid ranging from €1,000 to €10,000.

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan and Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív have announced that community representatives from Pobal Chill Chomáin and Pobal le Chéile will meet with representatives of Royal Dutch Shell in Dublin today (Friday March 20).

Last night (Thursday) an open meeting was due to take place between Government Ministers Eamon Ryan and Eamon Ó Cuív with community groups Pobal Chill Chomáin, Pobal Le Chéile, Rossport Solidarity Camp, Shell To Sea (Mayo), and members of the Erris community at Inver Community Hall.

Rossport residents Willie and Mary Corduff and Vincent McGrath, chairman Pobal Chill Chomáin, met with the Norwegian Ambassador in the Norwegian Embassy in Dublin on Wednesday, in a meeting which was facilitated by the justice and peace group Afri.
