Eight per cent increase in number of Mayo companies availing of training to improve competitiveness

Mayo companies are taking up opportunities for training and up-skilling of staff to meet business needs. Figures from the annual report of Skillnets, the national agency responsible for funding and supporting over 60 learning networks nationwide, reveal that the number of businesses accessing subsidised training in Mayo grew by eight per cent, with over 315 businesses investing in their staff across a range of sectors.

Figures from the 2016 annual report of Skillnets, the national agency responsible for funding and supporting more than 60 learning networks nationwide, reveal that a total of 1,016 businesses in Galway accessed subsidised training and invested in their staff across a range of sectors last year.

St Anne’s Orphanage

St Anne’s was situated in Lenaboy Castle on Taylor’s Hill. The old part of that building dates from the early 18th century. The house, which was situated on 63 acres of land, belonged to Colonel James O’Hara who was, in 1885, chairman of the town commissioners, and who founded a number of Galway industries. A lane led from the house to the gate of the estate which was beside where the Warwick Hotel is today.

Following a recent meeting of the Ireland West Airport Board, the Chairman Joe Kennedy welcomed the recent announcement by Government of the designation of lands adjacent to the airport as a Strategic Development Zone. Once this process is completed (which is estimated to take up to two years) it will provide planning certainty for any potential developments that may take place at the airport.

IPOA hopes for change in policy towards private landlords

The representative body for private landlords, the Irish Property Owners Association (IPOA), has given a cautious welcome to the new Government in the hope that policies towards the providers of private rental accommodation will accurately reflect the position on the ground.

Almost €20,000 in funding distributed to forty two sports and community groups by Mayo Sports Partnership

At a recent Mayo Sports Partnership Board meeting close to €20,000 was allocated to 42 clubs/organisations in Mayo through the Partnerships 2017 special participation grant scheme. Special guest at a recent presentation evening, Minister Michael Ring commended all involved in grassroots sport throughout the county, saying: “Supporting clubs and organisations through this annual small grant scheme by Mayo Sports Partnership recognises the vital role that sport is playing in our communities. Without volunteers sport just would not happen and it is vital that we continue to support them in their hugely important work."

June 16, 1957, was a blistering hot day, a day of celebration for the Galway GAA fraternity. It was the day the president of the GAA , Seamus McFerran, officially opened the Pearse Stadium in Rockbarton.
