Kilkenny Athletes once again enjoyed success at the National Juvenile Combined Events and B Championships, held in Tullamore last weekend.

Juvenile athletes from Kilkenny City Harriers athletic club had excellent returns from the Leinster Indoor track and field championships in Nenagh at the weekend.

Two former KCH athletes, Ciara Everard and John Fagan, representing their respective third level colleges of UCD and DCU, both struck gold at the Intervarsities Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

The Morton Stadium in Santry witnessed three world records, the one mile, two mile and three mile, in the summer of 1958. Fifty years on and a large international field at the Morton Memorial Meet on Friday night failed to set any records but delighted the spectators with the quality of their performances. The definitive event, the Morton Memorial Mile, saw the first nine finishers achieve sub four minute miles with victory going to Rob Myers, USA in 3 minutes 56.23 secs.

The county under 12 boys mixed relay team had a satisfactory trip to Athlone on Saturday. Competing in the Community Games All-Ireland cross-country they finished in third place. The team members were Luke FitzPatrick, Christopher Keane, Morgan Thomas and Dara Keane, all Aughavillar, Shane McGeary, Kilkenny City Harriers and Paul Manning, St Joseph’s.

Three golds were awarded to Kilkenny City Harrier (KCH) girls Aoife Hickey and Mary Kate Lanigan at the Celtic games in Grangemouth, Scotland on Saturday.

A beautiful sunny day in Tullamore on Saturday was made all the more memorable by the quality performances by the Kilkenny athletes. Various commentators suggest this was one of the most competitive schools finals for many years.

Three Kilkenny athletes were part of the successful Ireland team which finished second in Banka Bystrica, Slovakia, at the weekend. Eileen O’Keeffe had a season’s best of 68.25m to take second place in the hammer. Aoife Hickey finished seventh in the shot with a put of 11.86m and Joanne Cuddihy ran the second leg of the third placed 4X400m relay team.
