Galway was bursting with pride this week as Boston Mayor Marty Walsh received a hero’s welcome during a visit to his ancestral home, which not only further strengthened cultural and economic ties between the two cities but also revealed many new found cousins.

Moate has a proud tradition of both ceili bands and Irish traditional music. The Moate Ceili Band was founded in the early 1930s and was the first provincial band to broadcast from Radio Eireann. It broadcast regularly on Irish radio over the next 15 years (on average 10 times per year) and toured extensively both in Ireland and England.

The GAA Oral History Project aims to record the fullest possible picture of what the GAA has meant to the Irish people, in their own words. Galway City Council decided this past week to remove a statue memorializing the women who lived, worked and, in some cases, died at the Sisters of Mercy Magdalene laundry in the city. Dedicated in March 2009, the Mick Wilkins statue was commissioned by the same city councilors who now seek to remove it. It is located at the corner of Forster Street and Bothár Breandan O Eithir, standing in full public view close to where the laundry institution once stood.

The highly successful Lady Gregory Autumn Gatherings will continue in Coole Park, Gort, from Friday September 24 to Sunday September 26. Recognising the remarkable influence of Lady Augusta Gregory on the development of Irish theatre and literature, this 16th gathering highlights her unique inspiration for the early foundations of the Abbey Theatre.

Group therapy sessions will be commencing the week beginning April 12 in Ruxton Court (off Dominick St). The group will meet weekly and there will be a maximum of eight participants in each group. There will be a Coping with Depression group held Mondays at 11.00am or Tuesdays at 6.30pm Coping with Anxiety sessions will be on Mondays at 6.30pm. and Coping with Grief or Loss on Tuesdays at 11.00 a.m.
