Galway in song
Our first illustration today is of the cover of the sheet music for the song ‘Galway Bay’ as sung by Bing Crosby. It was written by Dr Arthur Colohan, apparently in memory of his brother who was drowned somewhere near Seapoint. I have also been told that it got its first airing in the hotel at the top of Prospect Hill. It seems Colohan, a medical student, was in there with a group of his fellow undergraduates when he told them he had written a song and sat down at the piano to play and sing it for them. The legend is that they fell all over the place laughing. He of course had the last laugh as his song became one of the world’s best sellers, topping the charts in Britain in1950.
Thank you letter to the people of Galway from an orphanage survivor
The Survivors Integrated Service at the London Irish Centre recently received a letter from a survivor of St Anne’s Orphanage, Lenaboy, Taylors Hill — The centre thought it would be nice to share this anonymous letter with the people of Galway as they want to recognise that not all survivors’ experiences of institutions were the same. This letter is only meant to reflect one person’s experience of their time at St Anne’s and their memories of how the community of Galway came together to give them a magical Christmas experience every year.
The Railway Hotel
This ancient site on the southern end of what we now know as Eyre Square was occupied by a Knights Templars convent in the 13th century. By the 17th century Robert Martin had a large house on the site, but this was taken from him by the Cromwellians and given to Edward Eyre. The Eyre family held on to the property and on May 12, 1712, Edward Eyre, son of the above, presented the land in front of his house to the corporation as a place of recreation for the people of Galway. In 1827, a man named Atkinson built houses at this end of the Square and by 1845, the site was occupied by a block of tenements owned by Fr Peter Daly.
