Belmullet-based county councillor Rose Conway-Walsh has been appointed to a special committee to represent local and regional authorities in the European Union.

The IASE, a national organisation headquartered in Belmullet which promotes equal employment opportunities for people with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups, is celebrating 20 years of leading the way when it comes to developing more inclusive workplaces.

Mayo-based companies Eachtraí Uisce Teo and Portwest were two of a number of companies acknowledged for their contribution to enterprise and innovation across the island of Ireland. They were awarded Business Ambassador status by InterTradeIreland at a special event held in the Mansion House in Dublin. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny is taking part today in a major nationwide day of awareness called Job Shadow Day, to promote employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Some 17,710 people in Mayo have a disability, according to the latest figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Belmullet-based charity the Irish Association of Supported Employment will be running its fourth employment week in a fortnights time from Monday, April 22 to Sunday, April 28. Over the course of the week employment organisations, jobseekers and employers will showcase employment for people with disabilities through a variety of themed events, seminars and a national publicity campaign to raise awareness of employment for people with disabilities throughout the week.
