O'Toole and Henry win election contests at convention
Tourmakeady's Kevin O'Toole was elected to the post of County Secretary at the 2011 Mayo GAA Convention held in Geesala at the High Chaparral on Monday night. The former County PRO held off the challenge of sitting assistant secretary Vincent Neary and Burrishoole delegate Margaret O'Malley when the votes were counted in north Mayo. Neary held on to his position as assistant secretary for 2012 after a vote, with Achill's Packie McGinty taking over as Mayo GAA President after he was elected unopposed alongside the majority of other returning officers. The other major position up for election was that of Croke Park delegate where the incumbent delegate Jerry Henry from Castlebar Mitchels was challenged by retiring county secretary Séan Feeney. After the votes were counted the Castlebar man held on to the position for another year.

Morley makes Irish shinty panel
Mayo hurler Shane Morley has been chosen on the Irish Hurling/Shinty Senior International side to face Scotland over the coming weeks. Morley impressed Irish manager Joe Dooley (Offaly) at recent trials held in Dublin, and was chosen on the 18-man Irish squad to face the Scots in the two-legged series. The opening game between the sides takes place tomorrow (Saturday) in Athy, Kildare, at 3pm - with the return leg taking place in Bught Park in Inverness on the following Saturday, October 29 at 2pm. The home game in Athy will be televised live on TG4 at 3pm. The side with the best aggregate score over the two legs in the hybrid game will win the series. Morley is one of eight players chosen from Christy Ring Cup counties, with 10 players on the panel being chosen from the McCarthy Cup sides. Michael Rice (Kilkenny) will captain the side in the series, while Tipperary duo Eoin Kelly and Brendan Maher are also included. Other notable names from the McCarthy Cup counties include Joe Bergin (Offaly) and Arron Graffin (Antrim). Twenty-six-year-old Morley (Tooreen) - who is making his first appearance in the Irish jersey - is the only Connacht player included in the 18-man squad.
Scrap metal needed in Ballinrobe

Carnacon look to inch over the line again
n Banagher on Sunday, weather permitting, Carnacon and old foes Inch Rovers will come face to face with the All Ireland senior title at stake. Sunday’s meeting in Offaly will be the third meeting of these sides in the final in four years, with Carnacon winning both finals and now looking to make it three out of three against the Cork club. The 2007 meeting in the final saw Carnacon win out by 11 points on a score of 2-14 to 1-6, while in 2008 putting back to back titles together Carnacon won by five points to seal their double.
Mayo GAA strategic action plan committee takes first steps with announcement of steering groups
The make-up of the Mayo GAA Strategic Action Steering Group, and the timetable it will follow, have been announced. The thrust of the Strategic Action Group’s work is to look at 10 headings with a view to producing approximately six concrete recommendations per heading.
