The make-up of the Mayo GAA Strategic Action Steering Group, and the timetable it will follow, have been announced. The thrust of the Strategic Action Group’s work is to look at 10 headings with a view to producing approximately six concrete recommendations per heading. Sub-committees are currently being established for each of those headings, and the chairpersons have been appointed, contact e-mail address are available on www.mayogaa.com Tony O’Connor (Ballintubber ) will head up the coaching and games development group, with Stephen Rochford from Crossmolina will lead the committee looking at bridging the gap: Bringing through high potential players; Neil Sheridan from Balla will oversee the working group looking at urbanisation and rural depopulation; with the group looking at the club board relationship and structures being jointly headed up by Sean Deane from Breaffy and Denise Horan, Ballinrobe. The finance and funding committee will be based out of Dublin with PJ Monaghan from St Sylvester’s and formerly of Belmullet heading his committee. Robert Grealis from Kilmeena will look at the public relations brief. Getting support from the Mayo Diaspora worldwide is another area that will be examined with Charlie Gilmartin of Kiltimagh heading up that group. Using Mayo GAA to stimulate the economy is another area that will be looked into with Stephen Carolan from Belmullet and Sean Hannick from Killala acting as joint chairpersons of that committee, while Aodan MacSuibhne will head up the hurling group and the secondary schools group has yet to have a chairperson announced.

The recommendations of each sub-committee will be collated into a full document, which will be launched in mid-January. This document will then go before the February meeting of the Mayo GAA Board in the hope of gaining ratification as the county’s official Action Plan. The committee may add an 11th heading in the coming weeks. From mid-January until the February meeting, GAA clubs throughout Mayo will be urged to discuss the recommendations, and the steering group will be holding a number of information meetings to facilitate this process. Mayo GAA Board chairman James Waldron called for participation in the process. “This is a very important undertaking on behalf of Mayo GAA, and we would urge all with an interest in Mayo GAA to make submissions so that we can chart a bright future for Mayo GAA,” he said.
