Mayo Sports Partnership is calling on communities and clubs across the county to help replicate the huge success of last year’s Operation Transformation programme, which encourages people across the county to start off the New Year by boosting their activity levels.

Groups, clubs, and communities across Mayo are being encouraged to take part in the latest series of Operation Transformation.

The Races of Castlebar were officially launched on Thursday August 1. This series of running events has been organised as part of the In Humbert's Footsteps festival that will be held in August. It is a joint venture between Castlebar Tennis Club and Mayo Sports Partnership.

Right now the Olympics is a hot topic. There are lots of experts and analysts commenting on how our Irish athletes have performed in London 2012. The question is being asked as to what we as a nation could or should have done to improve the standard or quality of the athletes being sent to the Olympics every four years. Politicians such as Senator Eamon Coughlan have proposed that a programme should be rolled out in schools to introduce children to athletics and Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring has emphasised the need for more money to be invested in our athletes in the future.

With the ethos of promoting inclusion and sporting activities throughout Mayo, Mayo Sports Partnership co-ordinator Charlie Lambert exuberates enthusiasm as he talks about the “positive work” he and his colleagues at the sports partnership are carrying out throughout the county at “grassroots level”.

This Sunday, August 22, Westport will host a 5k fun run and walk around the historic tourist town. The event is open to absolutely everyone of all abilities and will take place through the grounds of Westport House. The event starts at 4.30pm sharp at the North Mall, with registration taking place from 3.30pm in the same location. The course has been accurately measured, and is the ideal distance for families, walkers, Fit4Life members, and club runners. As part of the Westport Get Out There Adventure Festival, the Westport community, and Mayo Sports Partnership have come together to promote an Active Westport for all. A Fit Walking Clinic for Mayo County Council staff will be held at Áras an Chontae on Monday July 28 and for the public in CSKA Killasser/ Killasser Sports Complex on Monday Evening July 28 from 7.30pm to 10pm.
