This Sunday, August 22, Westport will host a 5k fun run and walk around the historic tourist town. The event is open to absolutely everyone of all abilities and will take place through the grounds of Westport House. The event starts at 4.30pm sharp at the North Mall, with registration taking place from 3.30pm in the same location. The course has been accurately measured, and is the ideal distance for families, walkers, Fit4Life members, and club runners. As part of the Westport Get Out There Adventure Festival, the Westport community, and Mayo Sports Partnership have come together to promote an Active Westport for all. Mayo AC men’s team finish second in IRMA world mountain trials
Robert Malseed (37:44 ) finished in a very credible seventh position and led the Mayo AC team to silver in the recent IMRA world mountain trials, over a tough 6km course in Crone Wood, Wicklow. Roberts’s teammate Anthony Murray finished in eighth position in a time of 38:22. The next Mayo AC man home was Finbar Murray who finished in 24th position in a time of 49.09, with Brian McMahon one place further back in 25th in a time of 49.22.
Catherine runs a PB at the recent Streets of Galway
A 17-strong contingent from Mayo AC made the annual pilgrimage to the Streets of Galway 8k recently. Catherine Conway Mayo AC ran 28:56 (chip time 28:52 ) a new PB over the 8k.
Ballyhaunis 8k road race next league race
Saturday August 28 is the date fixed for the Ballyhaunis 8k road race the next leg of the Mayo road race league. The race starts at 5pm.
Registration is at the Ballyhaunis Rugby Club, Doctors Road, from 3.30pm. Presentation of prizes and refreshments will be in the rugby club afterwards. Entry fee for the event is €15.
Swinford Harvest Series gets off to great start!
In an 80+ field John Byrne in 19:21 was first home in the Midfield 6k which was the first leg of the Swinford Harvest Series. John was followed by club mates Daniel Murray in 20:91 with Timmy Glavey and Andrew Lynskey in third and fourth positions. In the women’s section Ann Murray Mayo AC finished in first position in 26: 12 with club mate Anne Fahey 27:16 in third position.
Ballina athletic club 10k road race
The 21st Ballina Athletic Club 10k Road Race will be held in Ballina this year on Sunday September 12 starting at 3pm This year it is again part of the Mayo AC road league so competition should be very keen. There will be a 2k race for u15s also so this is an opportunity for our young boys and girls to get out there and join in the fun. Entry fee is €20 for adults and €5 for u19s and u15s with many spot prizes to be won also. Registration, assembly and changing facilities are at the Ballina Sports and Leisure Centre from 1.30pm.
This race is one of the main fundraisers for Ballina Athletic Club and the profit from same helps with the ongoing running of the club.
Ballina AC was well represented in the Swinford 5 mile road race held recently. This race makes up another leg of the Mayo Athletic Club league of road races. There was a good turnout in Swinford for the race run in conjunction with the Siamsa Sráide. Roger Barrett continued his impressive season with a fourth place finish. Michael Canty was next in fifth place and ran an exceptionally well-paced race to come through strongly in the second half of the race. Daniel Murray was sixth and secured the Junior men’s u19 title in the process. In seventh place was another Ballina AC athlete, Seán Gallagher, who picked up the prize for the first athlete over 40 home.
