During a recent visit to the Isle of Man, I was struck by a substantial monument in Douglas, commemorating a maritime rescue in 1830. Aware of another heroic rescue in Galway the same year, I realised both took place during the same storm.

James Hardiman, the Galway historian, wrote the following in 1820, “This colony has from time immemorial been ruled by one of their own body, periodically elected. This individual, who is dignified with the title of Mayor, in imitation of the head municipal officer of the town, regulates the community according to their own peculiar laws and customs, and settles all their fishery disputes. His decisions are so decisive, and much respected that the parties are seldom known to carry their differences before a legal tribunal, or to trouble the legal magistrates”.

Looking at the photograph of Emily Anderson on this page, the only formal portrait of her other than some distant group shots, it is difficult to imagine that this interesting Galway woman was probably the best codebreaker in the British Secret Service during the First and Second World Wars.

Week IV

We have all been to an Irish Pub somewhere in the world. Some are authentic—you could be in Castlebar or Bohola, others less so. La Gitane is a friendly bar in Bayeux that serves nice Guinness. Leaving there one evening last summer, I looked back to see a faded sign on the canopy above the door with the words ‘Irish Bar.’ I would never have guessed.

William Joyce recorded his final broadcast on April 30 1945 as the last great battle of the war raged. Russian troops, after a desperate struggle, finally wrenched Berlin from the grip of the Nazis. The once great city was then little more than streets of rubble. In an iconic World War II photograph Soviet troops fly the Soviet flag over the Reichstag May 2 1945.

Saturday, July 30, saw Foxford once again play host to the Argentinian Ambassador Ms Moira Wilkinson and the crew of the ARA Libertad to celebrate the 245th anniversary of the birth of the founding member of the Argentine Navy, Foxford native Admiral William Brown.
